Irish Flag Shot – Tricolor Layer Shot

This is a delicious layer shot that looks great – like the Irish flag! And just like the tricolor currently serving as the disputed version of Ireland’s flag, you get to choose what color the ‘orange’ part is. Using a vibrant orange liqueur made from cognac, like Grand Marnier, or a Triple Sec one like Cointreau will produce a green, white and orange flag. But, like many Irish, if you feel Ireland’s flag is green, white and gold, use brandy, or straight cognac.

Each ingredient in the tricolor is of a different density, so they can be made into a layer shot by pouring them into the glass in the correct order. To replicate Ireland’s flag, the Crème de Menthe goes in first, followed by the Irish Cream, and then your Liqueur/Liquor. Your best bet is to use a Bar Spoon to pour in the latter two. Float them into the glass by gently Pouring them over the back of the spoon.

Tastes great and just like a true layer shot should – the heavy layer hits you with a burn, the Irish cream cools the palate instantaneously and the crème de menthe brings a pervasive mint taste. A head buzz and a lingering fresh aftertaste is imparted onto the loyal shooter.

Alternatively, pour your Irish flag shot into your mouth and then swish it around before swallowing. You should feel the full array of Ireland’s flag and its proud history thrill your taste buds. Makes the perfect Patrick’s shot.

Ingredients

  • 1/2oz. (15 ml) Crème de Menthe
  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml) Irish Cream
  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml) Brandy / Orange Liqueur (Grand Marnier, Cointreau, etc.)

Want to prolong your patriotism? Double the measures and serve in a long shooter glass – but drink responsibly, that’s a healthy (double) dose of allegiance!

Directions

  1. Pour the Crème de Menthe into a standard shot glass.
  2. Float the Irish Cream on top by gently and slowly Pouring it over the back of a Bar Spoon into the glass.
  3. Float the Brandy/Orange Liqueur in the same way. Be careful not to upset the levels – you’ll turn this patriotic shooter into a lava lamp!
